Your page title and meta description are important parts of your website's SEO. They help search engines understand what your page is about and can influence how your page appears in search results.
Writing clear, descriptive titles and descriptions can also encourage people to click on your website when it appears in Google.
What is a page title?
A page title is the title that search engines may display as the main clickable heading for your page in search results.
It also helps search engines understand the topic of the page.
For example:
SEO-Friendly Website Templates | Super
A good page title should clearly describe the content of the page rather than simply using a generic name such as "Home" or "Page 1."
Tips for writing page titles
- Clearly describe what the page is about.
- Include the primary keyword or topic naturally.
- Keep the title concise and specific.
- Make every page title unique.
- Put the most important information toward the beginning.
- Avoid repeating the same keywords unnecessarily.
- Write for people first rather than trying to manipulate search rankings.
Example
Instead of:
Services
Try:
Web Design Services for Small Businesses | Company Name |
The second title gives both users and search engines more context about the page.
What is a meta description?
A meta description is a short summary of a webpage. Search engines may display it underneath the page title in search results.
For example:
Web Design Services for Small Businesses | Company Name
Explore our web design services for small businesses, including custom websites, responsive design, and ongoing support.
A meta description doesn't guarantee a particular search ranking, and Google may sometimes choose different text from the page to display in search results. However, a useful description can help users understand what they can expect from the page.
Tips for writing meta descriptions
- Summarize the page accurately.
- Include the main topic or keyword naturally.
- Explain what users will find on the page.
- Make the description useful and specific.
- Give users a reason to click.
- Keep it concise enough that the main message isn't unnecessarily cut off.
- Avoid stuffing keywords into the description.
Page title vs. meta description
Although they work together, they serve different purposes:
Element | Purpose |
Page title | Tells search engines and users what the page is about. |
Meta description | Provides a short summary of the page and can encourage clicks. |
Think of the title as the headline and the meta description as the short preview.
How to choose keywords
You don't need to add as many keywords as possible. Instead, identify the main topic of the page and use the words people are likely to search for.
For example, if your page is about photography services in Manila:
Page title:
Wedding Photography Services in Manila | Studio Name
Meta description:
Professional wedding photography services in Manila. View our portfolio, packages, and availability for your special day.
The main topic is clear without forcing the same keyword repeatedly.
Avoid using the same title and description on every page
Each important page on your website should have its own relevant title and description.
For example:
Homepage
Creative Web Design Studio | Studio Name
Services page
Web Design Services | Studio Name
About page
About Our Web Design Studio | Studio Name
Contact page
Contact Our Web Design Studio | Studio Name
Using unique metadata gives search engines and visitors more information about what makes each page different.
Don't write titles and descriptions just for search engines
SEO is not about filling your pages with keywords.
Your titles and descriptions should accurately represent the content users will find after clicking the result. Misleading titles or descriptions may encourage clicks initially, but they can create a poor user experience.
A good rule is:
| Describe the page clearly, use relevant keywords naturally, and write something that would make sense to a real visitor.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using generic titles
Titles such as "Home," "Welcome," or "Untitled" don't provide much information about the page.
Keyword stuffing
Avoid titles such as:
Web Design | Web Design Services | Best Web Design | Web Designer | Web Design Company
This is difficult to read and doesn't provide a good user experience.
Making every page identical
Don't use the same title and description across your entire website unless the pages genuinely contain the same information.
Making descriptions unrelated to the page
Your description should accurately summarize the content users will find on the page.
Focusing only on character counts
There are no guaranteed character limits for how Google displays titles and descriptions. Search results can vary depending on the device, query, and available space.
Instead of trying to hit an exact character count, focus on putting the most important information first and keeping your text clear and concise.
