Show your visitors a cookie consent banner, let them choose which cookies they allow, and keep an anonymous record of every decision. The banner is built into Super: no third-party consent tool, no extra script to install.
The cookie consent banner is available on all paid plans. You can set it up on a free site, but it is only shown to visitors after you upgrade.
Turning the banner on
- Log in to Super and open your site.
- Go to the Cookies page in the left sidebar.
- Switch on Cookie consent banner and click Save.
The banner appears on your live site straight away. It is not shown inside the dashboard preview of your site, so open the live URL in a private window to see it as a new visitor would.
What visitors see
On their first visit, visitors see the banner with three buttons: Accept all, Reject all and Settings. Settings opens a window where each cookie category can be switched on or off.
After the visitor decides, the banner closes and a small round cookie icon stays in the bottom-left corner (its name, Cookie settings in the page language, shows on hover and to screen readers). Visitors use it to change or withdraw their consent at any time; withdrawing is as easy as giving consent. The choice is remembered for 365 days in a cookie named super_consent.
Cookie categories
Category | What it covers | Default |
Necessary | Cookies the site needs to work, for example access to password-protected or members-only pages. | Always on, cannot be switched off |
Preferences | Remembering choices such as light or dark mode. | Off until the visitor agrees |
Statistics | Traffic measurement, for example Google Analytics. | Off until the visitor agrees |
Marketing | Advertising and campaign tracking. | Off until the visitor agrees |
If your site does not use a category, switch it off in its section on the Cookies page. It then disappears from the banner and the settings window, and the built-in banner text stops mentioning it. For example, with Marketing off the description says that cookies are used, with consent, to measure traffic.
Super Analytics needs no consent. Super Analytics does not use cookies, so it keeps counting page views anonymously whatever the visitor chooses. The banner tells visitors this in the Necessary category.
Banner settings
All settings live on the Cookies page. The preview on the right shows the real banner with your unsaved changes; switch between Banner and Cookie settings to see both views.
- Privacy policy URL: adds a link to your privacy policy to the banner.
- Position: a bar across the bottom of the page, or a box in the bottom-right corner.
- Banner texts: title, description and the three button labels.
- Category sections: a switch for each optional category, plus its name and description.
Every text field is optional. Empty fields use the built-in text, which you see as the placeholder.
Languages
The built-in texts are translated into every language you can choose for a Super site. The banner shows the language of the page the visitor is on, and is written right to left for languages such as Arabic, Hebrew and Persian.
On a site with more than one language, pick the language at the top of the Cookies page and fill in the texts for each one separately. Any text you leave empty falls back to the built-in translation of that language.
What changes on your site when the banner is on
- Google Analytics: if your site has a Google Analytics ID, Google Analytics starts in Consent Mode with everything denied. It is updated as soon as the visitor decides: Statistics controls
analytics_storage, Marketing controlsad_storage,ad_user_dataandad_personalization. Until then Google Analytics only collects cookieless data. If you switch Statistics off, visitors are never asked for it, so Google Analytics only ever runs without cookies; the Cookies page warns you about this. - YouTube videos: embedded YouTube videos load from
youtube-nocookie.com, so YouTube sets no cookies until the visitor plays a video. - Light and dark mode: the visitor's choice of colour mode is only stored when they accept Preferences. Rejecting or withdrawing Preferences removes a stored choice.
Your own scripts in custom code
Scripts you add in custom code (site-wide Head or Body code, or page-level code) run straight away unless you tag them. To make a script wait for consent, set its type to text/plain and add a data-category attribute with the category it belongs to:
Valid categories are preferences, statistics and marketing. A tagged script runs when the visitor gives consent, on later visits once consent was given, and on pages reached through the site navigation.
A script with data-category never runs while the Super banner is off. This keeps sites that use another consent tool working as before. If you turn the Super banner off, remove the tags from scripts that should run for everyone.
JavaScript API
Custom code can check consent through window.superConsent:
window.superConsent is already available to scripts in your Head code. When the banner is off, active is false and has() returns true for every category, so the same code works on sites with and without the banner.
To open the settings window from your own link or button, add the attribute data-cc="show-preferencesModal" to it:
<a href="#" data-cc="show-preferencesModal">Cookie settings</a>Styling the banner
The banner container has the class super-cookie-banner (on #cc-main), and the button that reopens the settings has the class super-cookie-settings. Use them in your custom CSS, for example to match your brand colours:
#cc-main.super-cookie-banner {
--cc-btn-primary-bg: #111827;
--cc-btn-primary-border-color: #111827;
--cc-font-family: inherit;
}
.super-cookie-settings {
bottom: 24px;
}Consent records
Every decision a visitor makes is logged anonymously: a random consent ID, the time, and which categories were accepted. Super does not store names, emails or IP addresses with it.
The Consents card under the preview on the Cookies page shows the last 7, 30, 90 or 365 days:
- total decisions and distinct visitors,
- how many accepted all, rejected all or made a custom choice,
- how often each category was accepted.
Click Download CSV to export the records of the selected period, one row per decision with the columns consent_id, timestamp_utc, necessary, preferences, statistics and marketing. Use the export as proof of consent if you are ever asked for it. Records stay readable even if you turn the banner off later.
