Is your search engine description different to what you have specified on your site SEO settings?
Noticed that the description shown in Google search results doesn’t match what you set in your site’s SEO settings? Don’t worry, this is very common.
Even if you write a meta description for your page, Google may choose to display a different one. This happens because Google tries to show the most helpful description for each search. If it thinks another part of your page explains the content better for a specific query, it may use that text instead.
This usually happens when:
- The meta description is too short, too generic, or missing
- The description doesn’t closely match what someone searched for
- Google finds a more relevant sentence on the page (like a heading or paragraph)
How to improve your chances of Google using your description
While you can’t force Google to use your exact description, you can increase the likelihood by:
- Writing clear, specific descriptions that summarize the page content
- Including important keywords naturally (don’t stuff them)
- Making sure each page has a unique description
- Keeping descriptions helpful and readable for humans, not just search engines
Think of meta descriptions as suggestions rather than strict instructions. Google’s goal is to show searchers the most useful information, even if that means rewriting what you’ve provided.
